How to Design a Yard Sign People Can Read From the Road
You will find yard signs all around, from front lawns to job sites to busy roadsides, and it is because they work. A yard sign only does its job, though, if people can read it as they drive by. When a sign is too small, too busy, or hard to read, the message gets missed. Here are some simple tips to keep in mind when you design one.
Start With Size, Distance, and Speed
The right sign size depends on where it will go and how fast traffic moves past it. A sign on a quiet street does not need to be as big as one along a busy road. Smaller signs usually work fine in neighborhoods, and some areas even require them to stay under a certain size. Larger signs get noticed on busy commercial streets, and the biggest signs do their best work along rural roads and highways.
Here are common sizes and their viewing distance:
- 12″ x 18″: good for close-range viewing, like sidewalks or indoor spaces.
- 18″ x 24″: a solid fit for residential areas with moderate traffic speeds.
- 24″ x 36″: best for commercial zones or roads with higher speed limits.
- 48″ x 96″: made for highways or anywhere long-distance visibility really matters.
Speed matters as much as size. The faster traffic moves, the less time a driver has to read your sign, so a faster road usually calls for a bigger one. Our Sign Size Tool lets you click through common road speeds, from 25 up to 65 mph, to see the size we would suggest.
Keep the Message Short
It is easy to cram too much onto a sign, and that usually works against you. A driver gets only a few seconds to catch the message, so a sign loaded with text and graphics is tough to read from a moving car. Keep it simple, and when you have a lot to cover, either go bigger or trim the message down. It helps to focus on four things:
- Who: your company or organization name, made big and easy to read with a layout that suits the length of the name.
- What: the business or event you are promoting, with your logo added to build recognition.
- Where: the event location, shown as a full address in a larger city or just the town name in a small one.
- When: the date and time of the event.
Pick a Font That Is Easy to Read
Some fonts are much easier to read from a distance than others.
- Sans-serif: clean and easy to read from far away, which makes fonts like Arial and Swiss721 a good choice for outdoor signs.
- Serif: a more traditional, formal look, like Times New Roman and Garamond, that works well in professional settings.
- Script: looks nice but can be hard to read, like Brush Script MT, so use it only when needed.
- Display: playful and eye-catching, like Balloon Bd BT and Comic Sans, which makes it a good fit for promotions and events.
Use Colors That Contrast
Color has a big effect on how readable a sign is. The main rule is that your lettering and background need to contrast with each other.
- Avoid light on light: light yellow letters on a white background are hard to see, and pastels and fluorescents do not stand out against white either.
- Avoid dark on dark: black letters on a navy background will not show up.
- Use a dark color for lettering: black, navy, burgundy, red, or forest green all work well.
For example, black lettering on a yellow background is one of the strongest combinations for grabbing attention on the road. High-visibility inks like Yellow and Reflex Blue are built to stand out outdoors, and you can see the full range in our Ink Color Gallery. Pick a color that contrasts with its surroundings too, so the sign does not blend into snow, grass, or dry ground, and skip khaki, grey, and brown backgrounds. Adding a second color gives it even more impact, and it is usually worth the small added cost.
Choose the Right Material
You also want a sign that holds up outdoors so it stays readable over time. There are a few common options:
- Corrugated plastic: rigid, weatherproof, and easy to put up or take down. One of the most popular choices, and it works well indoors or outdoors.
- Poly-coated cardboard (fold-over): a double-sided sign that holds up well against wind, snow, and rain with no print show-through. The most cost-effective choice for low-volume orders.
